FAQs

What is a BaseCase app?

A BaseCase app is an interactive presentation, which is "driven" by a spreadsheet. Conceptually, it is like a combination of PowerPoint (for presentation) and Excel (for computing results). BaseCase apps can take many forms: interactive slide decks, dashboards, e-posters, value summaries, value dossiers, embeddable calculators, etc.

Can a BaseCase app be easily adapted for other countries?

Yes. Apps are fully flexible, you can change the lay-out as well as the data. You can work with us to develop country adaptations, work with your solution provider or we can train your affiliates to do the changes themselves.

Can I build BaseCase apps myself?

Yes. We recommend that you complete the certification training to become a Certified Content Developer and build BaseCase apps yourself.

Does the system support internationalization – different languages?

If I make changes to my original model in Excel, how do I make the changes in BaseCase?

If you have converted your model to a BaseCase spreadsheet, we suggest making changes directly in BaseCase. Once published these changes are instantly available. You can also make changes in Excel and then just re-upload your model. If you are making structural changes, make sure you check your interface and reconnect your inputs and outputs so your model computes correctly.

Is my data secure on your servers?

BaseCase recognizes the extreme importance of data security. Every aspect of our system has security as a first priority. For more detailed information, please contact us at support@basecase.com.

In a BaseCase app, how is the spreadsheet connected to the presentation?

We use Excel style-references to connect the presentation to cells in Excel – it’s easy for anyone with basic Excel knowledge to understand.

Do you convert my model into a new format?

You have two options when uploading an Excel spreadsheet into BaseCase:

  1. to leave it in the original Excel format and run it on the server;
  2. to convert your model to a native BaseCase spreadsheet.

The advantage of option (1) is that you have full compatibility with Excel. If you make changes to your Excel model outside of BaseCase, your can re-upload your model at any time - all references remain intact. Of course, if you move your inputs & outputs around, you should update your references in BaseCase.

The advantage of option (2) is that your spreadsheet can run locally and no connection to the server is required to recompute your spreadsheet. For this reason your spreadsheet will also compute faster. Another advantage is that you can update your spreadsheet within BaseCase - there is no need to re-upload your model to update your app.

A disadvantage of option (2) is that the BaseCase spreadsheet supports a limited subset of Excel formulas - although these cover the majority of models used in haealthcare.

What devices do BaseCase apps work on?

BaseCase has been built so it runs on all devices. These include desktop and laptops both Windows and Mac, and mobile devices including tablets.

Why is BaseCase better than using an Excel workbook?

Microsoft Excel is an excellent piece of software, used throughout healthcare for complex modeling.
However, it is not an ideal platform for distributing interactive presentations, sales tools or apps:

  • Complex user interfaces (UIs) are difficult to create in Excel, and require visual basic coding (VBA) expertise.
  • Interactive Excel presentations cannot be styled to meet the high standards of a corporate marketing department.
  • Excel presentations can be easily 'broken' (by editing the wrong field, or deleting the wrong content).
  • Incompatibilities between various versions of Excel (2003, 2007, 2010, Mac, Windows, etc) can make distribution problematic.
  • When you distribute an Excel presentation, you "lose control" of your data and it is therefore not possible to:
    • Revoke access to an Excel presentation you have emailed to a customer.
    • Review how your presentation is being used (or misused!).
    • Remotely update your presentation - so you end up sending around "value-presentation-revision-6.xls", and hoping that people use your updated version.

In contrast BaseCase is a centrally managed cloud platform which addresses all of these issues.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is becoming increasingly common within the software industry, and many everyday web services are now based in the cloud. Instead of installing software locally, cloud computing allows users to simply open a web browser and access programs via the Internet.

Google Apps, the Adobe Creative Cloud, Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, and Dropbox are all examples of cloud-based services that use the Internet to store, manage, and process data.

BaseCase too is a cloud-based service, and as such, users avoid the need to save a file locally and distribute copies by email. Since projects are saved automatically to a secure remote location, users can create, collaborate and share easily.

Is the BaseCase platform secure?

BaseCase uses password protected user accounts to secure access to the model and all model data. A strict ACL system is in place to maintain, view and edit permissions. The encryption module ensures the privacy of all Internet communications using 256 bit encryption with 2048-bit SHA-2 keys certified by DigiCert®. This industry-standard level of encryption is identical to that in use by most online banking systems.

All the main servers in our network are protected by an industry standard Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDS/IPS) and denial of service (DoS) protection.

Is the BaseCase platform reliable?

BaseCase maintains a redundant backup of our main servers. In the face of an unpredictable event such as hardware failure, this configuration ensures that our service stays operational through a failure of any component, and will continue to function at high levels of performance.

Is my data backed up?

A second level off-site data backup ensures that your invaluable data is safe from catastrophic events. All off-site data is encrypted using 256 bit AES and signed using 2048 bit RSA keys, the same encryption standard that’s used by the US Government.

Can I export BaseCase apps as files and distribute them using my organization's content distribution system (CDS)?

BaseCase is an all-in-one content creation and distribution platform, with a built-in user management system to control access to apps. You cannot export apps from BaseCase Interactive and distribute them using another platform. However, we offer multiple options for integrating BaseCase into existing IT systems and CDSs:

  • None: Access BaseCase by browser or dedicated app.
  • Simple: Distribute a copy of our dedicated apps through your CDS or corporate app store.
  • Advanced: Distribute a customized client app through your CDS or corporate app store, and integrate BaseCase with your Enterprise Identity Management System / Single sign-on (requires a subscription to BaseCase Branded Edition).
